Situated right in the heart of the MLC Kew campus, our Nicholas Learning Centre
(NLC) is the much-loved home for our Year 7 and 8 students. With its flexible learning spaces, bright colours, generous rooftop garden space and a sweeping view of our large oval, it’s no wonder the NLC has been recognised across many architecture and design awards since its completion in 2019.
Constructed during 2018, the design brief for the Nicholas Learning Centre was to provide a space that would enable our Year 7 and our Year 8 students to live and work together. The focus of the design was to ensure we had flexible spaces that would enhance the learning for our students, utilising the latest pedagogical research to support the design and build. MLC appointed McIldowie Partners Architects to realise the MLC vision who, together with Taylor Cullity Lethlean landscape architects and McCorkell Construction, designed and built a space that is both beautiful and highly functional to best support our students’ learning and achievement.
We have been delighted and honoured that the NLC has been recognised for its innovative design, both through being nominated and in receipt of accolades across multiple architecture awards throughout the year. These include;
Of the win at the 2020 Learning Environments Victorian Chapter Awards, the panel stated that “the sophisticated colour palette, extensive use of full-length glazing, and clever use of sliding doors, acoustic elements, and discrete spaces make the building feel welcoming and agile-for-learning. The carefully selected furniture allowed for tiering and supported flexible learning spaces. It has created spaces which the panel felt they would personally love to learn in!”
MLC is committed to developing innovative and unique learning environments to match our equally innovative approach to education. As such, we look forward to finalising the refurbishment of the Dr Wood Learning Centre
; a pedagogy-led learning space for our Year 9 students, once again designed by McIldowie Architects and due for completion in early 2021.
