Building Confidence Through Year 5 Music

Building Confidence Through Year 5 Music

August 17th, 2026

The Year 5 Instrumental Program is a signature part of the MLC Junior School experience, providing every student with the opportunity to discover the rewards of learning and performing music.

Running throughout the academic year, the program plays an important role in developing not only musical skills, but also confidence, resilience and teamwork.

A key feature of the program is that students learn an instrument that is entirely new to them. Before making their selection, students take part in a two-week instrument exploration period, during which MLC's specialist instrumental staff demonstrate the range of instruments available and introduce students to the unique sound and character of each one. This allows students to make an informed choice and begin their musical journey with excitement and curiosity.

Students can choose from an impressive range of instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, trombone, French horn, trumpet, saxophone, double bass, guitar, recorder and percussion. Guided by specialist Music staff, students participate in small-group lessons designed to support beginners as they build their skills and confidence.

"Students learn the benefits of perseverance, cooperation and teamwork when working within the classes and practising at home,” explains Lynette Maslen, Music Instructor. “They become more confident in their ability to manage setbacks and keep trying when a new task seems impossible.

“The joy of making music together is also incredibly important, enhancing students' wellbeing and sense of community."

Students were able to try different instruments in a relaxed, supportive environment before selecting which instrument to learn.

The experience also provides valuable opportunities for growth for those who already learn an instrument.

“For students with prior knowledge, they are introduced to new concepts and musical styles that enhance their overall understanding and level of performance,” Lynette says. “They can apply their existing knowledge to the new instrument and often are able to extend their musical education by joining new music groups, such as the Junior School Band within their first year of group lessons.”

The program culminates in two performance opportunities each year: a dedicated Year 5 Concert in Term 2 and participation in the highly anticipated Music Fest in Term 3. These events allow students to share their progress with family, friends and the wider College community while experiencing the excitement of performing as part of an ensemble.

This year's Year 5 Concert, held in the James Tatoulis Auditorium on 3 June, showcased just how much students can achieve in a short time. Performing in the Year 5 Band, Recorder Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and Double Bass Ensemble, students took to the stage with confidence and enthusiasm, demonstrating the skills they had developed throughout the semester.

For some students, the Year 5 Instrumental Program is just the beginning of a longer musical journey.

“We see many students who gain so much from this introductory program that they elect to continue with private music tuition on their chosen instrument in Year 6 and beyond and also participate in in co-curricular music groups such the Junior School Band,” Lynette says.

With over 40 music ensemble groups across the College, building these foundations early opens up a vast array of musical opportunities that await students in secondary school.

The Year 5 Instrumental Program reflects MLC's commitment to providing rich learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Through music, students develop creativity, confidence and a strong sense of belonging while discovering interests and talents that can stay with them throughout their school years and beyond.
