The Star Chorale

25 Years of Harmony, Connection, and Song

Born from MLC's rich musical tradition, the Star Chorale is a shining example of how foundations laid at MLC can create lasting connections that reach far beyond our Kew campus.

As a Methodist school founded on the concept that "Methodism was born in song," choral music forms a large part of our history and memories at MLC. Under the legendary partnership of Dr Harold Wood and Miss Ruth Flockart, and later continued by Jane Elton Brown, MLC's musical tradition flourished.

It was Jane's vision and determination that sparked what would become the Star Chorale. In 2000, following her retirement from MLC, Jane and colleague Leonie Thomson invited former members of the MLC Senior Choir to a "Back to Choir" event. The response was overwhelming, and the MLC Old Collegians' Concert Choir was born.

In 2004, the MLC Old Collegians’ Concert Choir was renamed the Star Chorale and included over 100 members. Members included the MLC Male Voice Choir that was founded in the early 1990s by Jane. While the Chorale’s connection to MLC remained strong, it had embraced singers from all walks of life.

Today, the Chorale embodies the inclusive spirit that MLC instilled in its founders. As one long-time member reflects, "It has been the foundation of building more connections in the wider community."

Perhaps most rewarding are the personal connections that have flourished through the Chorale. Judy Downie (Downey, 1957), who has been with the Chorale since its beginning, speaks warmly of relationships that have evolved from mentor-student dynamics to genuine friendships. "The young woman who is our Treasurer – we had perhaps had a mentor relationship, but now we are just mates."

These friendships span generations and backgrounds. "My closest mate [in the Chorale] is not an Old Collegian," Judy notes, highlighting how the choir has created bonds that might never have formed otherwise. The Chorale welcomes everyone – with some members travelling from country Victoria to participate!

Under current Music Director Andrew Wailes, who also conducts the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, Melbourne University Choral Society, and Box Hill Chorale, the choir has been able to participate in large-scale performances once again.

These collaborations have included partnerships with the Box Hill Chorale, Melbourne University ensembles, and even the City of Melbourne Highland Pipe Band. The choir has also formed meaningful connections with Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Kew and the Kew Philharmonic Society.

In our increasingly digital world, the Star Chorale offers something precious: genuine human connection. Every week, choristers gather at MLC to rehearse, creating what Judy describes as "human connection through harmony."

The benefits extend far beyond musical achievement. As Judy observes, "Singing is extremely good for you – good for breathing and the friends you make are good friends."

As the Star Chorale prepares for its 25th anniversary celebrations, including a special dinner on August 30th where they'll honour the two people who started it all, and a guest appearance at the MLC Old Collegians Celebration Event, it stands as testament to how educational institutions can nurture gifts that keep giving long after graduation.

The Star Chorale welcomes new and experienced singers. Whether you were in the school choir and are looking to reconnect with your musical roots or you are interested in trying out the joy of choral singing for the first time, you'll find a warm welcome every Thursday evening. After all, the most wonderful harmonies are created when diverse voices come together.
