The opening of the Aquatic Centre marks the completion of Phase 1 of MLC’s Physical Education and Sport Precinct, an exciting step forward in a long-term vision to support student wellbeing, movement and connection.
Celebrated by more than a thousand members of the MLC community, Discovery Day in June provided an opportunity for families to experience the new Centre, the enhanced Junior School playground and the surrounding grounds. The opening included a meaningful Smoking Ceremony led by proud Wurundjeri man and friend of the College, Pallyan Hunter.
In her address on Discovery Day, Principal Julia Shea reflected on the purpose of the Precinct.
"At MLC we know that physical activity plays an important role in confidence, wellbeing and learning,” Principal Shea said. “This Precinct has been designed to create more opportunities for every student to participate in ways that feel right for them."
The impressive Aquatic Centre is a contemporary facility designed to support students at every stage of their aquatic journey, from learning water confidence right through to diving. Featuring a 50-metre pool, dedicated diving area, and the Shirley Hsieh Learn to Swim pool, the Centre provides opportunities for students of all ages and ability levels.
The Centre also reflects MLC's longstanding commitment to girls' sport and creating opportunities for young women to thrive through participation and performance. Senior Prefect Zara Keogh (2026) spoke about what the new facility represents for current and future students.
“As young women in sport, it means a great deal to recognise the ongoing investment MLC has made in providing exceptional sporting opportunities,” Zara said. “Their commitment to supporting girls and championing women in sport is reflected in this remarkable new Aquatic Centre.”
The Centre also includes the Marjorie Nicholas Hub, a flexible space designed for learning, connection and community gathering, reflecting the role the Precinct will play beyond sport alone.

Opportunities for activity and connection continue beyond the Centre itself, across a series of intentionally designed outdoor spaces, including the Outdoor Court area, Wong Family Athletics Hub and the Ferraro Family Wellbeing Garden. The enhanced Junior School playground is also a highlight, with a sensory nature walk, adventure play areas and the Ng and Wong Family Sports Court, which encourage exploration and movement for younger students.
Student feedback played an important role in shaping many aspects of the new facilities, from the Aquatic Centre change rooms to elements of the enhanced Junior School playground.
“As students, we are immensely proud of this space and what it will offer to everyone who uses it,” Zara reflected. “It is especially meaningful to know that student perspectives have helped shape its design and purpose.”
With Phase 1 now complete and being enjoyed by students, the precinct will continue to evolve. Phase 2 will introduce a new indoor Sports Centre, featuring multi-purpose courts, a state-of-the-art gymnasium and fitness studios, further strengthening how students engage in activity, sport and connection.
Together, these facilities will provide an inclusive environment that encourages all girls to participate in physical activities, reflecting MLC’s commitment to nurturing the holistic development of every student. Designed for current and future generations, the Precinct will support not only sporting achievement, but also wellbeing, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.
