OCC President's Message

The spirit of warmth, connection and celebration

What a joy it has been to reflect on the recent MLC OCC Annual Chapel Service and Lunch, held on Saturday 17 May. This cherished tradition, dating back to 1934, continues to bring together generations of Old Collegians in a spirit of warmth, connection and celebration.

The day began in the beautiful setting of the Fitchett Chapel, where we were guided in a heartfelt service by Debra Saffrey-Collins. Her thoughtful words set a gentle and reflective tone, reminding us of the shared values and experiences that bind us together. You can read her homily in the Chapel Service story in the newsletter.

Following the service, we gathered for lunch, reconnecting with familiar faces over delicious food and engaging conversation. We were honoured to hear from our guest speaker, Emeritus Professor Denise Grocke AO (1963), whose inspiring talk on music therapy sparked thoughtful discussion and reflection. The music, the singing, and the many shared stories throughout the day reminded us why the OCC continues to be such a special part of the MLC experience.

This event is just one example of the meaningful work done by the OCC Council, a group I’d love to take a moment to acknowledge. The OCC Council is made up of 16 passionate volunteers, including our Patron, Anne Scott OAM (Simpson 1957). Representing graduating years from 1991 to 2023, the council brings together a diverse group of alumnae, some former boarders, all with unique perspectives and skill sets. Every member volunteers their time and energy to furthering the mission of the OCC: to bring past students together through events, mentoring, and initiatives that celebrate lifelong friendships and maintain a strong connection to the College.

Whether it’s coordinating social media, organising the annual Celebration Event, or helping to administer the Val Kerr Fellowship, each council member plays an essential role in keeping the OCC vibrant and relevant.

We are always looking to grow our community and deepen our engagement. If you’re reading this and wondering how to get involved, whether that’s applying for a fellowship, attending an upcoming event, or even joining the council, know that your participation is not only welcome but deeply valued.
