Guiding students toward meaningful futures

At MLC, students are guided through a variety of pathways to help them discover and pursue their interests and career aspirations.

Mid-year is an important time for many students: Year 12 students begin preparing for university applications, Year 11 students are in the final years of study, Year 10 students are choosing between VCE, IB or VCE VET, and Year 9 students are selecting their electives for the following year. It’s a time filled with questions, excitement and big decisions.

To support students through this journey, MLC hosts a range of events designed to help students make informed decisions about their future pathways.

Careers Expo

The annual Careers Expo is a highlight for students and families alike. It’s more than just a showcase of tertiary institutions; it’s a chance to hear directly from MLC alumnae working across diverse industries

This year, over 500 students and parents from Years 9 to 12 attended the event. Representatives from a range of universities and tertiary institutions were in attendance, providing students with access to information about courses, entry requirements and campus life.

In addition, a panel of 20 alumnae shared their career journeys, offering honest insights into the twists and turns that shaped their paths. For Year 10 and 11 students, it was a valuable moment to reflect on subject choices and future goals. For Year 12s, it offered inspiration and reassurance as they prepare to take their next steps.

Subject Supermarket

Another key event is the Subject Supermarket, where students and families explore the wide range of subjects and pathways, which includes more than 60 subjects. This is an opportunity for students and families to understand the electives and Senior School subjects and pathways on offer, with guidance from experienced teachers.

Students and families speak directly with teachers, Department Heads, and coordinators from VCE, IB and VCE VET. Whether they’re choosing electives for Year 10 or considering a subject change in Year 12, the Subject Supermarket helps students feel informed and empowered.

Senior School Colleges and University Tour

As part of MLC’s Global Learning Program, Year 11 and 12 students can visit the USA to gain first-hand insights into Colleges and Universities throughout New York and Boston and gain a greater understanding of the admissions process. Students visit institutions such as Harvard, Brown, Yale, NYU, Boston University, MIT and Columbia University.

The group also immerse themselves in cultural activities, from museum tours to musical theatre, experiencing life as a College student in the US.

University Transition Day

For students planning to study locally, University Transition Day provides a valuable introduction to life after MLC. Students visit Monash University, the University of Melbourne and RMIT, participating in workshops and sessions designed to build confidence and perspective.

This year’s sessions focused on mindset, encouraging students to stay open, resilient and forward-thinking as they navigate change. Guest speakers shared practical advice on how to show up with purpose, even in moments of uncertainty.

Ongoing Careers Guidance

In addition to these key events, MLC provides students with personalised ongoing support through one-on-one careers counselling. From Year 10 (and in some cases, Year 9) onwards, students are paired with the same careers counsellor. This continuity allows students to build strong, trusting relationships with their counsellor, set meaningful goals, and track their progress over time, ensuring they feel supported and confident in their decision-making journey.

At MLC, future planning is not a one-size-fits-all process. It’s a journey of discovery, supported by caring teachers, inspiring alumnae, and a community that believes in each student’s potential. Whether students are choosing subjects, exploring careers, or preparing for university, they’re guided every step of the way.
