At MLC, every student has the opportunity to explore music, whether they’re picking up an instrument for the first time or preparing for a solo performance on stage. Our music program is one of the most welcoming and comprehensive in Melbourne, open to students of all ages and abilities across Junior and Secondary School.
“Music at MLC aims to support the students and community to engage with music education as both an enjoyable pursuit and as a valuable tool for academic and social development.” says Vicki Dede, Director of Music at MLC.
“Our programs aim to be inclusive and ensure that every child and family can be part of it and the many benefits that contribute to our students holistically.”
From curriculum-based learning to co-curricular ensembles, music is woven into the fabric of MLC life. In Junior School, all students participate in specialist music lessons, including the Year 2 Strings and Year 5 Band programs. In Secondary School, music continues as part of the curriculum through Years 7–9, with elective options in Year 10 and pathways into VCE Music and VCE VET Music Industry.
Beyond the classroom, students can join more than 20 choral groups, bands, orchestras and ensembles, some auditioned, many open entry, as well as access private music tuition. Each term, students explore a diverse repertoire of genres and styles, building not only musical skill but also confidence and connection.
Performance plays a key role in this journey. Throughout the year, students take part in a wide range of events, from informal lunchtime concerts and evening soirees to major College showcases. In 2025, two new events joined the calendar: The Showstopper Concert and Music Mosaic.
The inaugural Showstopper Concert brought together 15 students from Years 7–12 for a night of exceptional solo performances. From auditioning to performing, students experienced a formal, real-world concert environment, complete with black-tie flair. Performing in front of an audience of fellow students, family and staff, students showcased their talents on piano, violin, harp, flute, horn and clarinet. The repertoire featured works by some of the world’s most celebrated composers, including Chopin, Brahms and Schubert.
“The line-up of talent was truly impressive,” says Vicki. “it was a highly anticipated event on the 2025 music calendar. Aspiring musicians were encouraged to attend, get inspired and aim for the heights of performance excellence.”
Meanwhile, Music Mosaic welcomed over 1,300 audience members across two vibrant sessions. More than 450 students from Junior School to Senior School performed in a variety of ensembles, from percussion and strings to bands and choirs. As a thrilling new addition to the MLC concert calendar, Music Mosaic reflects our ongoing commitment to nurturing confident performers and celebrating the musical journey at every stage.
At MLC, performance isn’t just a moment on stage—it’s a powerful part of each student’s growth. Through music, students develop confidence, discipline and a deep sense of achievement.
“Whether students are picking up an instrument for the first time or performing in front of hundreds, music at MLC is about students pursuing their passions and discovering what they’re capable of.” Vicki says.
