At MLC, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive. Our Learning Diversity approach reflects this belief, offering a comprehensive framework that supports all learners, whether they need additional assistance or are ready to stretch beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom.
Our approach is grounded in strong, respectful relationships. Teachers and Learning Diversity specialists work collaboratively to understand how each student learns best, creating a supportive environment where learners feel seen, valued, and empowered. This relational foundation is key as it allows us to tailor learning experiences that are both rigorous and responsive.
Within the Learning Diversity program, the Learning Enhancement and Enrichment Approach, offers high-potential students' opportunities to excel through a range of learning experiences and programs that extend beyond the differentiated classroom. It’s about recognising and nurturing each students’ unique strengths and aspirations.
Whether through subject-specific extension, targeted mentoring with gifted university students (including MLC alumnae), or withdrawal groups focused on design thinking and problem-solving, MLC’s Learning Enhancement program ensures that students are encouraged to grow as confident, capable contributors beyond the classroom.
One key example of this approach is the da Vinci Decathlon – a national academic competition that challenges students to think across disciplines, collaborate under pressure, and apply their knowledge in creative and unexpected ways.
In June, MLC’s Year 7 and Year 10 teams each claimed first place in their year levels at the State Final, with four teams representing Years 7 to 10. Competing in ten demanding disciplines, including Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Codebreaking, and English, our students demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also resilience, innovation, and teamwork.
MLC Learning Diversity teacher, Elspeth Maddocks, says the da Vinci Decathlon is unique in its interdisciplinary nature: “Unlike many enrichment programs that focus on a single skill area, the decathlon requires general knowledge, conceptual thinking and teamwork across multiple disciplines, often blending logic with creativity. It encourages students to take intellectual risks and think beyond the traditional boundaries of the curriculum.”
To be involved in the teams, students submit an expression of interest, which is then followed by a process based on academic data, experience and team compatibility. The goal is to build a team where each member brings something unique, whether it’s mathematical precision, artistic flair, or a knack for lateral thinking.
“While high achievement is important,” Elspeth notes, “students who are adaptable, enthusiastic, and collaborative are often the best fit.”
To prepare for the event, students participate in regular enrichment sessions, working through past papers and developing strategies based on the year’s theme. Our Learning Diversity teachers play a dual role throughout this process: “Our role is both instructional and mentoring. We guide students in working effectively as a team, help identify individual strengths and gain confidence in unfamiliar topics."
The impact of the Decathlon goes far beyond the competition day. Students develop critical thinking, creative problem-solving, research skills, time management, and resilience. They also learn to lead, to listen, and to value diverse perspectives.
“Throughout our preparation, I’ve seen students grow in confidence and capability,” says Elspeth. “They apply classroom knowledge in new and imaginative ways, using maths in engineering challenges, or drawing on English and History in Poetry and Cartography. It reinforces the value of a broad and curious approach to learning.”
Above all, students find the experience deeply rewarding. “They enjoy the opportunity to work in a team of like-minded peers, solving unusual and complex problems, and the novelty of exploring subjects they may not encounter in the regular curriculum,” Elspeth shares. “Students value the sense of achievement that comes from being stretched intellectually and succeeding as a team.”
At MLC, gifted learners don’t just succeed—they thrive. With thoughtfully designed programs and dedicated educators, we encourage every student to explore their potential and go further.
