MLC recently hosted its first-ever Democracy Day. The student-led initiative was designed to inspire active citizenship and democratic engagement across the College community.
Launched by Year 10 students and leaders of the student-led Politics Club, Alanah and Vicky, the event brought together students from Years 7 to 11 for a day of learning, discussion and debate. The program featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers, including Professor Andrea Carson, Dr Olivia Ball, Flavia Bellieni Zimmerman, and Jess Wilson MP, who shared their expertise on fairness, equality, and justice in today’s world
Students participated in interactive sessions and lively debates, exploring the importance of rights, responsibilities, and decision-making in a democratic society. One highlight was the Oxford Union-inspired debate on the motion: “This house believes that democracy is failing the 21st century.”
Democracy Day reflects MLC’s commitment to fostering informed, active citizens who engage thoughtfully and courageously with the world around them. Congratulations to Alanah and Vicky for bringing this inspiring event to life!
Both students shared their thoughtful reflections on the day:
“The MLC Democracy Day was abuzz with discussion, curiosity, and learning. The day intended to foster civic participation and spark conversations on democracy by taking student's civic, legal, and political learning outside of the classroom. Importantly, the event allowed for direct student engagement with the leading experts and lawmakers who shape our democracy today.
“As the leaders of Politics Club, we were inspired to plan and deliver this event after seeing political disconnect within the cohort. Especially in today's world, where democracy becomes ever more shaky, we believed increased civic engagement in students (the next generation of voters and leaders) was both important and timely.
“The day started with conversations on human rights by Councillor Olivia Ball and on women’s place in democracy by journalist Dr Andrea Carson. Students from Years 7–9 then took the stage to pitch policy on transport, health, and sustainability to MP Jess Wilson. Activist Yasmin Poole followed with an empowering talk on women’s engagement in politics, before a spirited Oxford Union debate asked whether 'Democracy is Failing the 21st Century'.
“The day ended with an Amnesty Club panel, a fiery “Prove Me Wrong” Economics Club debate, and other club events. Overall, we believe the experience was incredibly rewarding for us and hopefully also for those who attended. We're so appreciative to Ms Rebecca Cooke, Head of Civics and Commerce and to all of the teachers who helped make this happen and hope to do this again next year!”
