Studying languages at Methodist Ladies' College is rewarding, challenging and fun. Whether it’s French, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish or English B, students can achieve a high level of linguistic ability while absorbing the flavour of different cultures and traditions. We also offer a range of cultural tours, exchanges and hosting opportunities for students to build new skills and cultural awareness, as well as a range of extension opportunities for high achieving students.

Learning a second language at MLC is compulsory until the end of Year 10.

Languages offered at MLC include:

Chinese

MLC provides Chinese courses from Years 7 to 12, including VCE and IB.

Students can choose courses from the advanced language level, suitable for students who have Chinese family backgrounds and who use the language at home, or beginner language level, suitable for students without a Chinese-speaking background. Students can use traditional or simplified Chinese characters to express their ideas and to present their writing tasks. Chinese First Language courses are also offered in Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 VCE and IB.

At all year levels the Chinese courses involve a variety of class activities designed to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The courses are supported by Chinese teaching assistants and aural and visual materials.

During their study of Chinese, students will have the opportunity to be involved in incursions and excursions, both locally and overseas. Years 9 and 10 students have the opportunity to tour China during the school holidays.

French

MLC offers a continuous French course to students from Years 5 to 12.

One of our greatest strengths is the variety of courses offered, which can be completed at IB or VCE level. A complete beginner’s course is also offered to students entering Year 7.

Studying French gives students the opportunity to speak the language in many situations including role plays, poetry recitations, debates, speeches and individual presentations. Each situation gives students the opportunity to practise their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students have access to interactive CD ROMS and the internet which, combined with resources available on the College’s online learning system, further enhances learning opportunities.

In Year 7, students can join the French Partial Immersion Program (see below). University extension programs are available for high-achieving Year 12 students who have either completed VCE Units 3 and 4 or who are enrolled in IB French either at Standard Level or High Level. University extension programs may earn students credit towards an undergraduate degree,

Francophone culture features prominently in all our courses and students can join a range of tours and exchanges that help them cement their language skills and develop cultural understanding. Year 11 students can apply for an exchange to France for six to eight weeks. Students stay with a host family and attend school for four weeks, develop their aural comprehension skills and gain enormous confidence from being understood in a French speaking environment. Year 8 French Immersion students have the opportunity to participate in a one-week tour of Vanuatu during the school holidays.

French Immersion

MLC’s French Partial Immersion program for students in Year 7 through to Year 9 fosters rapid acquisition of the French language. In Year 7, students study Maths, History (one semester), Geography (one semester) and Language Arts in French. In Year 8, students study Drama (one semester), History (one semester) and Language Arts (all year) in French. Language Arts provides a base in the French language, which helps students in their Partial Immersion content-based subjects.

Japanese

Students can study Japanese from Kindle to Year 4 and then from Year 7, and continue through to the VCE and IB programs in Years 11 and 12. Accelerated students can also undertake University Enhancement studies.

The academic course is supported by a number of activities including a Japanese Assistant Program, which provides support for students in all year levels and aims to enhance conversational skills and cultural understanding. Other activities include visits from Japanese students, exchanges and hosting through our sister school program, tours to Japan and activities such as cultural demonstrations and competitions.

Spanish

Students can study Spanish from Year 9. Students can then study IB Spanish Ab Initio in senior levels.

Spanish offered in Year 9 is designed as a beginners' course, and enables students to learn the language and culture of the Hispanic World, made up of more than 20 countries. Students learn how to communicate effectively with simple structures as well as develop their capacity to interact in familiar situations.

Spanish Ab Initio is a Group 2 subject within the International Baccalaureate (IB). It is a language learning course designed for students with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish.
