The Home Economics Department and School of Hospitality at Methodist Ladies' College allows students to enjoy food and learn about its significance in a global context. Students learn in a dynamic and challenging environment where they have the opportunity to shape their wellbeing, health and career.
In MLC’s unique, purpose built kitchen facilities (including the Terrace Restaurant, MLC’s very own on-site, student-run restaurant), students prepare modern recipes designed for individual tastes and needs.
At a time when much food preparation occurs outside the home, the Home Economics classroom at MLC provides opportunities for students to appreciate the importance of food and nutrition for physical, social, emotional and intellectual development.
Home Economics is offered as a core subject in Years 8 and 9 and an exciting range of electives are available for students in Years 8 to 10 including Food Glorious Food, French Patisserie elective, Food For Entertaining and Multicultural Foods.
In Years 11 and 12, VCE Health and Human Development, VCE Food and Technology and VET Hospitality are offered. In addition, Year 11 and 12 VCE VET students, with support of the Home Economics and Hospitality staff, run the Terrace Restaurant. This is a full service training restaurant that is open to the public and offers afternoon high teas and lunch on alternating Thursdays and Fridays during Terms 1, 2 and 3.
