Methodist Ladies' College's comprehensive Physical Education program teaches students how to enhance their own and others’ health, wellbeing and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts.

Our programs offer students an experiential curriculum that is contemporary, relevant, challenging, enjoyable and physically active. In a supportive environment, each student is encouraged to develop a healthy and physically active lifestyle and strive to reach her full potential in all that she attempts.

Integral to all PE programs is a variety of opportunities for participation, co-operation and leadership. The excellence of the MLC Physical Education and sport experience derives from the quality of our large teaching and coaching team. With 24 Physical Education teachers and around 130 specialist sport coaches, our staff have the skills, drive and imagination to make every class and team experience inspiring and enjoyable.

In Years 7 and 8, students are taught games and sports for understanding and they develop their skills in various movement activities such as athletics, gymnastics and dance. Aquatics is also major component of the curriculum. Additionally, in Year 8, we offer First Aid as an elective. In Years 9 and 10, students are exposed to a wide variety of sports, games, fitness and recreational activities. Students analyse their own activity habits, refine their skills and have the opportunity to learn new games and sports from all across the globe. Our wide range of electives includes Sports Event Management, Sports Science, Sports Performance and Coaching, Outdoor Education and Food and Fitness.

The PE department is a hive of activity in Senior School. All Year 11 students participate in a student-driven, recreation-based PE class once a fortnight.

Specialised subjects at Years 11 and 12 include:

  • VCE Physical Education
  • VCE VET Sport and Recreation

In addition to the above, MLC offers a wide range of physical activities and recreational opportunities for all students to take part in before school, at lunchtimes or after school. These range from structured sport teams to fitness sessions, weight training (for students in Year 9 and above), swimming and gymnastics.

There are also several avenues for participation in Co-curricular Sport at MLC: House sports, intensive sports and interschool competition through Girls Sport Victoria (GSV). With over 30 sports to choose from, there is something for everyone.
