The French department at MLC offers a continuous course to students from Year 7 to 12. One of our greatest strengths is the variety of courses offered, culminating in completion of either the IB or VCE.
French courses at MLC allow students to be actively involved in putting their language skills into practice. Opportunities to speak French include role plays, poetry recitations, debates on issues, speeches and individual presentations. The balance of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills makes it possible for all students to experience success. Technology plays an important role in French courses at MLC as it facilitates the use of interactive CD roms, provides access to authentic and up to date material on the internet and increases independent learning through the College's online learning system.
Further to the opportunities provided by all MLC French courses, additional specialised programs exist. In Year 7, students can join the French Partial Immersion Program and The University of Melbourne program is available for high achieving students Year 12 students who have completed VCE Units 3 and 4.
Francophone culture features prominently in all our courses and students can join a range of tours and exchanges that build on their new skills and cultural awareness. Year 11 students can apply for an exchange in either Grenoble or Paris for six to eight weeks. Students stay with a host family and attend school for four weeks, develop their aural comprehension skills and gain enormous confidence from being understood in a French speaking environment. Year 8 students have the opportunity to participate in a one week tour of New Caledonia during the September school holidays.
