At MLC, Auslan, Australian Sign Language, is offered as a language in VCE and is popular with both deaf and hearing students.
Auslan is the language of the Deaf community, which has evolved from the sign languages developed in Australia during the nineteenth century. It is a visual/spatial language and has no written form; all tasks are videoed to assess the students' receptive and expressive skills.
Students benefit from a communicative approach to language which is enhanced by having a Deaf language assistant and Deaf guest speakers attending classes.
The study of Auslan actively promotes cross-cultural understanding between the Deaf and hearing communities.
