Recently MLC's Year 10 Staging a Play students performed Michael Butler's 'Between These Lines', a play that follows the lives and interactions of eight characters for one ordinary day.

GALE_17-05-27_16259.JPGFrom young children and teenagers to the elderly and middle aged, students transformed characters across a range of ages, allowing for a depth of perspective and an insight into the complexity of intergenerational relationships.

As the drama unfolds, these relationships between friends and family are explored, with the audience observing the interconnectedness of the characters' lives and how the everyday choices that we make impact others - often with consequences unexpected and meaningful.

The ways in which the characters handle situations and face the realities of life create heartfelt scenes that transcend the confines of the stage, creating a drama that is moving and engaging. Moments of pathos are punctuated by comic relief, delivering an emotive insight into the highs and lows of the human experience.

Superb acting showcased the talents of these Year 10 students, who enjoyed exploring the themes of the play and bringing their own interpretations to each character. Their imaginative portrayals of authentic characters delivered a moving performance that resonated with the audience and provoked a thoughtful response.

Students worked collaboratively as part of technical and backstage crews, makeup, hair and costume design teams, where they gained meaningful insights into the world of theatre production.

With such famililar themes, realistic situations and ordinary characters, this play provided an excellent night of thought-provoking theatre - all those involved can enjoy the veritable success of 'Between These Lines'.

Staging a Play is a Year 10 elective that provides students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of all stagecraft areas and explore a range of performance techniques. The course culminates in a public performance towards the end of the semester, with students fulfilling every aspect of theatre production.
